Restaurants In Downtown Mobile

Cafe 615 - 615 Dauphin Street, (251) 432-8434:Cafe 615 is an interesting little place. Nicely interconnected smaller dining rooms that give the impression of a much smaller place. A friendly and inviting atmosphere and the food is excellent. For just a night out for dinner or as the beginning of more to comein the downtown district, Cafe 615 is a great start.

The Hurricane Brew Pub: Get a locally brewed beer and food. Both are pretty good.

Liquid Sushi - 661 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36602 (251) 5432-0109: One of the only Sushi Bars you'll find in Mobile. Many of the Chinese Buffet style restaurants serve a little sushi and the Japanese Steak House does too but Liquid is Sushi.

Noell B's is a fine restaurant and bar in downtown Mobile at the corner of Conti and Conception. 19 S Conception Street, Mobile Al 36602, 251-432-3535. One of my favorite things about Noell B's is the location. During Mardi Gras this is an excellent place to enjoy a parade. You have great food great drinks and a place to get out of the weather when it is cold, rainy or both. And one last thing, you have a nice clean little restroom instead of a dark port-a-potty or a place behind the bushes.

NoJa - 6 N. Jackson Street, (251) 433-0377: This is one of my favorite downtown restaurants. NoJa Been there several times, most recently on my 10th anniversary, and I've never been dissapointed. The food is always exceptional, the staff is knowledgable and friendly and the atmosphere is nothing but perfect. NoJa is a tiny little restaurant and is the only place in Mobile with a little New Orleans style courtyard. Try NoJa, where you can't go wrong, and always save some room for dessert. I suggest the Ginger Donuts, fantastic.

Serda's Coffee Company - 3 South Royal Street, (866) 783-8925: Coffee, food and music, you couldn't ask for a better combination. Start your day, and end it, at Serda's.

Spot of Tea - 310 Dauphin Street, (251) 433-9009 After a decade of request to be open at night, we found the timing right during our fifteenth anniversary to embark on this exciting adventure.  Our goal is to serve the finest seafood, steaks, soups, and specialty dishes in Mobile, with a happy, knowledgeable and fun staff as we have done in the daytime for a decade and a half.  Spot of Tea's AFTER FIVE serves dinner Wednesday thru Saturday. Also enjoy a walking tour of Mobile with Spot of Tea.

The Bull is another one of my personal favorites. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ever ordered. Try the brisket, you won't regret it. 609 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL 36602,  (251) 378-5091. Another project from Wendell Quimby who has had a hand in Callahan's, Wintzells amd Cafe 615.

Veets has been around for quite awhile and provides excellent entertainment along with some good food so come for the entertainment and get a bit to eat. Doug Previto and the Family Jewels are hundreds of years of musical experience and they make every night they play a memorable one.

Wintzell's Oyster House has been around longer than me and that is more that 50 years at the writing of this little article. When I was growing up it was still owned by Ollie Wintzell. It always was, and still is a unique place. The walls of the original downtown location are covered with hand lettered cards of jokes and anecdotes that were penned and in many cases thought up by Ollie's brother or cousin, I forget which, Jack Wintzell, who was my science teacher in elementary and high school and who gave me a sense of humor, a love of flying and an inquisitive nature.Wintzell's is growin, with locations in west Mobile, saraland, Tuscaloosa and other places. You need to visit the downtown Wintzell's for the authentic flavor.

Garden District Dining:

Callahan's Irish Social Club: Simple food but some of the best you'll find anywhere. Live music, great beer and a very friendly atmosphere. Callahan's is a place you will always feel welcome whether you are Irish or not.

La Pizzaria: Mobile's casually elegant dining experience! Gourmet pizzas, specialty pastas, veal, steaks, and the freshest seafood available on the Gulf Coast!

Midtown Dining:

Ashland Pub - 2453-A Old Shell Road - 251.479.3278. These guys don't have a real web site yet but the do have real pizza. Dine inside or out, enjoy the atmosphere. Great pizzas and sandwiches the last time I was there.

Butch Cassidy's Cafe - 60 N. Florida Street,(251) 450-0690: Thisone is right around the corner from my house and you cna't beat the burgers, the wings, the reubens, the beer. A great place for lunch or dinner.

Chuck's Place - 2503 Old Shell Road, (251) 478.2881. Chuck does a great job with this little restaurant. Very personal service. Many folks make Chuck's there regular weekly dinner spot. Quite atmosphere in an old house just down the road from Butch Cassidy's and Ashland Pub.

Queen G's Cafe - 2518 Old Shell Rd. 471-3361: Home-cooked vegetables and entrees. Lunch only, Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The food is great the dining room is tiny. You won't regret a visit to Queen G's Cafe.

Heading South:

The Mariner Restaurant at the Grand Mariner Marina, on the south side of the Dog River Bridge. The Grand Mariner has been around for years and has always been known for seafood. Get a table overlooking the harbor at Dog River

You can visit the Zebra Lounge (251) 473-2997 on Dauphin Island Parkway (DIP), a funky bar atmosphere. You might wnat to head even further south to Julie's Place on DIP, just south of the Theodore Industrial Canal. While you're down that way you can stop in at The Pelican Reef Restaurant at Fowl River for some great local seafood. Another excellent choice is Baudean's (251) 973-9070, you'll find it on the right just before you get to Pelican Reef.

The Lighthouse Restaurant: Now this one will really get you off the beaten path. Head southeast toward Bayou La Batre to get to this one. 12495 Padgett Switch Rd, Irvington, AL 36544 (251) 824-2500. Sometimes the best ones are the hardest to find. They don't have a web site but you can be certain  the seafood will be fresh. Bayou La Batre is the local center for shrimp and oysters

If you keep going down DIP from the Pelican Reef you end up in Dauphin Island so we'll save anything further south than the Pelican Reef for the Dauphin Island page.

Heading East:

The causeway, as it is know locally,  has long been a local favorite for seafood. years ago Palmers Restaurant had a line out the door and around the building and for good reason, the seafood was impeccable. Sadly Pamers is long gone but other restaurants have appeared.

Original Oyster House site atop piling on the north side of the causeway where is moved following Katrina, or was it Ivan. The Original OysterHouse also has a location in Gulf Shores.

The Blue Gill is a restaurant and a music venue for some pretty talented musical acts. Come site by the water and enjoy a good meal and great shows. Come for the Original Alabama Idol competition.

Ed's Seafood Shed is another causeway hot spot. Great food a nice overlook of the north end of Mobile Bay. Stop by any chance you get for some great local seafood.

Felix's Fish Camp Grillmay not sound like much and if you leave it at that you are missing a really good thing. The dining room upstairs serves up some incredible seafood creations and there is usually some good music playing too. Come early and plan to stay late.

Oysterella's Seafood Restaurant on the causeway is a fairly recent addition. Music and good food in a beautiful location on the north side of the causway.

Dining In Springhill:

Camilles's Sidewalk Cafe - 5817 Old Shell Rd., 251-343-0200: Excellent sandwiches

Chat-a-Way Cafe -Springhill Shopping Center: A nice little sandwich shop and very popular with the Springhill crowd.

Dreamland Bar-b-que - 3314 Old Shell Road, (251) 479-9898: It all started in Tuscaloosa in 1958 and is slowly spreading around the world, well at least around the south. Some of the best ribs anywhere. White bread and ribs are the standard but there are other sides and selections. You can even order online and have them shipped to your door.

Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers - 5660 Old Shell Road, (251) 380.1500: Great pizza, sandwiches, salads and Calzones. There are actually several locations in Mobile now so find one and enjoy.

Wings to Go -Old Shell Road across form the USA campus: I like wings and I really like these wings. Nothing fancy, just good wings.

Heading West:

This means you're headed toward Mississippi. West Mobile has some pretty decent restaurants as well.

Tiny Diny is another restaurant that is off the beaten path. If you don't find it you'll miss some of the best home cookin' around and you'll certainly miss the banana pudding. It's worth the trip all by itself. The Tiny Diny is locatet on Halls Mill Road at Pleasant Valley. 2159 Halls Mill Rd, Mobile, AL 36606

Nan Seas (251) 342-1353. Nan Seas used to be on the Bay just north of Dog River but that property was last destroyed in hurricane Katrina and the owners decided to move inland a little for the next blow. Now this little restaurant sits on a small lake but still serves the great seafood it has always been known for.

Big Time Dinner is another place serving excellent food. You'll find the Big Time Dinner at 4936 Cottage Hill Rd Mobile, AL 36609 - (251) 666-2141. A 50's style dinner with good wholesome food, a family place.
