Fresh tomatoes are a hugely valuable commodity in the south and, I would imagine, just about everywhere else. You can always head sown to your local farmers market or favorite grocery store but there is no guarantee the tomatoes you find there will be fresh picked or locally grown. The only way to insure an adequate supply of fresh tomatoes is to plant them yourself. You don't need acreage but you do need to plant at the right time.

 

You can sow tomatoes on your window sill from mid January to the middle of February. You can also sow eggplant and peppers.

 

Starting in March you can set tomato plants out in pots.

 

June is the time to sow tomatoes, eggplants and peppers in pots.

 

Pick as they become ripe and enjoy the fruits, or in this case, vegetables of your labors
